Reach out and touch …
The smallest of gestures can touch someone’s life … I thought about this while talking to my mother this morning. I was relaying the story of how the night before at the exhibition opening a woman came up to me and started talking.
She remembered meeting me several years ago at the gym (you know how long ago that must have been!!) She also remembered working with my sister on a summer job years before, down the fact that my sis was growing back her hair at the time.
But it seems what she remembered about meeting me was that I had asked her if she needed any help because she has a disability, something with her arm. I saw her and without being patronizing or condescending I offered my assistance. Apparently she thought it was just a very sweet thing to do though she didn’t need my help.
So here it is that tiny gesture on my part, which didn’t even come to anything, and this woman has remembered me for 5/6 years. It is perhaps a sign of how isolated people in our society have become that such a small connection can have such a lasting effect. Even just saying hi or a simple smile might have a huge effect on someone around you. I think it shows that you never know how your actions can touch someone.
