Air kisses with my mother, finger kisses, and pizza farewells. These are all some of the rituals I have been part of. Rituals allow groups of people to reinforce their identity. Whether between friends, family or couples, rituals are an important part of sealing a relationship.
Many rituals are inside jokes that help members feel like a part of the group, saying “I belong and you don’t”. Others are secret signals so even outsiders don’t know they have missed something. Others are just celebrations of being a group.
Last night I had my requisite surprise (but not a surprise) farewell (but not a farewell) pizza lyme with my pan folks. It seemed a bit surprising given that we were bothering given that I am only going to be away for 3 months. But when I thought about it I realized that it is these rituals as simple as they are that keep the group together. The few people that may have left without being bid farewell were never truly a part of the group - they stood on the outside (whether they realized or not).
So as you go through life, don’t ignore the simple rituals that join you to the people around you.
