Wow!! One whole week out of touch! I was starting to feel like I was on some deserted island. My list below:
- The good:
- Found a studio 5 minutes walk from campus
- My first classes yesterday went well, the teachers are really great
- One of my teachers thinks nothing of telling us not to believe the “shit” people tell us
- The other teacher is Bajan and the accent is such a refreshing change (miss you Sasha!!)
- The class material is so interesting that you don’t mind if the teacher runs long
- Limed by All Stars panyard on Friday
- Helped paint the set for my sister’s church production
- The afore-mentioned production was hilarious (imagine songs from Mr. L. E. Fontman being recited in perfect Queen’s English)
- The bad:
- My books are not yet in the UWI bookstore and won’t be for another week they say
- The rain is never-ending, it starts at lunchtime everyday and goes for hours
- I already have my first assignment due Friday, for which I have to interview a “well-known” Caribbean entrepreneur, then write a 5-6 page essay
- Almost nothing on campus opens before 9 and everybody goes home at 5 sharp
- There is no clock in the classroom so the teachers don’t know when they run long
- The downright unpleasant:
- UWI here is even worse than UWI at home, I can’t finish my registration yet which means no ID card, which means no shuttle, no computer facilities, no gym etc
- The heat is ridiculous, you are dripping as soon as you move from a fan
- We have to start working on a business plan on Wednesday which will be worth 60% of our grade
More to come…

The fact that you had so many good things to say says to me that you’re gonna be cool. Have fun doing what you do.
I know you can adjust well. You are, after all, free-spirited! Just ride the challenges, and still take in everthing…it will be over before you realise.
Take care.
Well glad to hear that the good was really good. But you really shouldn’t have expected much from UWI. Hush!
Just move slowly (the heat), wake late (the 9am thing – weird!), search the net (no books) and start the work early and leave lots of time to party – hopefully.
Tek care,
Aleiya
