Silly Me!!!
Whoo boy!! I must be a really unreasonable person! How could I think to suggest that someone attempt to minimize the disruption they cause in class? I put forward what I thought were 3 feasible alternatives:
- Put the phone on vibrate and keep it on you so you know when it rings
- If the phone has no vibrate or you know you won’t feel it, turn off the ringer and keep the phone in sight so you know when it’s ringing
- At least keep the phone out and within reach so you can answer after the first ring and not have it ringing as you dig in your bag and then walk through the class to take the call outside
I wasn’t suggesting to turn off the phone, especially when (as was her case) you are expecting an important phone call or when (as is the case with another member) you have a young baby at home. I merely said that it was distracting, disruptive and disrespectful to the rest of the class. Silly me to think that persons in a class or in a meeting deserve the same sort of respect as the performers on a stage and the rest of the audience (a frequent topic of discussion among us).
