My thoughts during May, 2007

Proof of…?

You know those scenes in movies where someone, usually the protagonist, sees something that makes them realize that what they previously thought was a dream may have actually happened? It’s always a bit of a twist and provides a “hmm” moment.

So what about in real life? Have you ever had something similar happen to you? Not necessarily where you thought it was a dream but maybe just a false memory. Humans have a way of twisting memories to suit their purposes and the more rational among us can usually recognize when we’re probably doing that.

But every now and again, you encounter a tidbit, a souvenir, a jotting, that makes you stop and go “Hey, I’m not crazy. It actually happened the way I remember.”

Or did it?

Whirlwind

I think that’s a good word to describe my life, despite it’s deceptive slowness. Having recovered from my surgery, and gotten full swing into concert rehearsals, I got a call last week to start work today. So yes people, I am again employed. Again it’s a short-term contract with the possibility of it being extended.

Thus continues the adventure that is my life.

P.S. New Kingston people are crazy when it comes to traffic, man.

What I’m reading

One of my new favourite authors is a gentleman by the name of David Wellington. He produces online serial novels where a new chapter is posted every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. While it takes some getting used to, not being able to continue reading through after an exciting chapter, it does make it easy to find time to keep up.

His latest novel is Plague Zone, a story of a zombie “flu” that takes over the US and one man’s journey back to his hometown. His stories are all of that genre, vampires, werewolves, zombies, so if that’s not your thing then don’t even bother. His earlier serials include:

One of the interesting things is the community that builds around these serials. A quick review of the comments on each chapter will show you how involved people get in the characters and guessing which way the plot is going.

Identity

it’s
funny sometimes
(or maybe sad)
the way that people
perceive
and
have differing views
(though often the same)
on the person you try
to be
you
never do pretend as such
(or at least you think)
you’re trying to be
yourself
but
it’s never enough
(or perhaps too much)
for someone who just
isn’t you

Can’t?

I still remember…

… because I can’t forget.

Dreamscape

In the darkness, an image…
Hope’s illusion or specter from the past.
Each it’s own space and time.
Stirring emotions new and old.
Clarity returns with the sun,
bringing with it the warmth of reality.
