My thoughts during August, 2007

Workplace Annoyances

Those people who:

  • insist on repeating ‘Good Morning’ till they get an answer from you.
  • can’t pick up that you are busy and insist on stopping to talk.
  • repeatedly ask you about the same thing every time they see you.
  • think you’re friends because you once had a conversation with them.
  • remind you of things that you could not possibly have forgotten.
  • want to hear every intricate detail of how you do what you do.
  • ask you how things are going each of the dozen times they pass your desk.

That’s not what I meant!

Ever since I read the book by that title, which discussed male-female (mis)communication, that phrase has always quietly repeated in my head whenever I hear two people having a discussion where they are obviously talking about two different things.

Part of the problem is that you know what you mean, in your head, but very often what comes out is perceived differently leading to miscommunication. Of course, sometimes you don’t even really know what you mean and that makes explaining to the other person extremely difficult, if not impossible.

Way too often, problems in relationships, be they between couples, friends or family, are rooted in relatively simple communication hitches. So take a deep breath and try to hear yourself from the other person’s perspective. It may help you understand why you are not coming across clearly.

What is a media emergency?

This is what ran through my mind this afternoon as I stood outside my office building watching two media vehicles (Observer and CVM to be specific) racing through New Kingston on their way to cover a fire at a nearby hotel.

The racing to the scene in itself was not that unusual. The blaring horns and flashing headlights was annoying but not a strange sight when a convoy of vehicles are heading somewhere. What I marvelled at was the fact that they were racing down the right-hand side of the road. Apparently their presence at the scene was more critical than that of the fire truck that had just forced its way down the left-side, sirens blowing to clear the traffic from its path.

Now I am a big supporter of the media and their freedom of speech. I do believe in the public’s right to know. However, I don’t know that the media has some emergency rights giving them free reign over the roads.

Now given the fact that they reached the hotel before the fire truck they were following, I do hope that they didn’t block the path of the truck and add to the emergency.

Rain, rain, go away!

Well the last 3 weeks have been eventful. Would have been sad if I’d been sitting around doing nothing and not blogging.

At the beginning of August, I took a well-needed break. Headed to Miami for some rest and recuperation after the successful concert season. The shopping was good, the company was better.

Once I was back at work, I had mad catching up to do plus deadlines like crazy. That more or less took up the last couple weeks. Imagine, me, leaving work after 9 p.m.?!? What has this world come to?

Then of course, there was the whole date with Mean Dean. My family fared well, no major damage to anyone’s property. So now it’s post-hurricane season and I am so happy!! We got back light today! So only one real day spent in the dark.

So now that life is back to “normal” I will be trying to blog a bit more often. See y’all.
