Go learn something

Scott Young, over at Pick the Brain, wrote a great article on How to Set Up your Personal University. A personal university is a self-education concept where you determine your field of study, identify the necessary learning materials, set your own pace etc.
The advantages of this approach include the indefinite continuation of your studies and the low cost. But for it to be successful, you need to take it as seriously as schooling you pay for.

A personal university isn’t just reading a lot of books, though. Some basic steps are:

  1. Write down what you want to learn
  2. Identify important books in those subject areas
  3. Identify free learning opportunities
  4. Design projects that will  use your new knowledge or skills

His article goes into some of the benefits of self-education, as well as how to go about choosing material for your studies. Also well worth reading is his article on low cost self-education.
